Exciting Sites and Festivals in Burnett and Douglas County, Wisconsin

For a spectacular dance show, watch the Tamburitzans perform at Duquesne University. The Tamburitzans are America’s longest-running multicultural song and dance company. The Duquesne University chapter houses “one of the world’s finest collections of international folk artifacts and library resources” and performs Eastern European song and dance shows in traditional costume year-round. See their website here.

At the Grantsburg World Championship Watercross, over a hundred competitors race snowmobiles over Memory Lake! The first race was hosted by the Grantsburg Lions Club in 1977, and was as unusual as it was challenging. Since then, the race has gained recognition from the International Watercross Association and thrilled thousands of participants and spectators over the years. The event also includes street performances from popular bands and the Best Fireworks Show Around.

The Siren Lilacfest in May honors the flower that lent the town its name: “syren” is Swedish for “lilac,” and lilac blooms perfumed the town’s first post office, run by Swedish immigrant, Charles Segerstrom. The festival features lilac sales, a Scandinavian bake sale, a Swedish buffet breakfast (or “Frukost”), community-wide garage sales, and a Minnesota Kite Society Fly & Build event. The Lilacfest is loaded with fragrant, family fun!

Douglas County’s History Theatre creates original plays (comedies, dramas, vaudevilles, children’s plays, and more) based on local history. Previous plays have focused on union movements, the wild Prohibition era, holiday themes, and more. The History Theatre features the town’s first mural, of the extravagant Palace Theatre, and is worth a look!
